Brief Description
Ashes to Answers, The Investigative Impact, presented by staff of the Monmouth County Fire Academy
Full Description
Examines how the first responders' operations directly affect the ability to determine the origin and cause of a fire.  Law Enforcement and firefighters are often the first personnel to observe fire scene conditions, and their actions may preserve, or destroy, critical evidence.

The course provides students with an understanding of fire behavior, investigative indicators, evidence preservation, and the use of fire as a weapon.  Case studies and investigative examples illustrate the relationship between fire suppression operations and successful criminal prosecution.

The course also emphasizes Inter-Agency cooperation between fire service personnel and Law Enforcement investigators.  The goal is to improve fire investigation outcomes by educating responders to recognize and preserve critical evidence at fire scenes.

Upon completion of the course students will be able to,
1. Explain the basic principles of fire behavior and how fire effects evidence.
2.  Identify fire scene indicators used to determine origin and cause.
3.  Recognize the role firefighters play as witnesses in fire investigations.
4.  Describe how fire may be used as a weapon, and identify common arson motives.
5.  Explain evidence recognition and preservation procedures for fire scenes.
6.  Identify how firefighter actions impact criminal investigations.
