Full Description
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the diverse sources of information utilized in criminal investigations.  Students will examine the methodologies and ethical considerations involved in collecting and analyzing data from various channels, including public and private databases, phone records, confidential informants, and case studies.  Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application, the course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to effectively gather and interpret information in the context of criminal justice.
  
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to,

1.   Understand the Role of Databases in Investigations.  
- Identify and utilize various public and private databases, such as CLEAR, GLADIATOR, Backtrace, and others to gather background information on individuals and entities.  
- Assess the reliability and limitations of data obtained from these sources

2.   Analyze phone records for investigative insights.  
- Interpret phone call data to establish connections and patterns among individuals.  
- Apply forensic analysis tools to reconstruct communication networks and identify potential leads.

3. MCCI as a resource.  
- Records and Capabilities of MCCI.  
- Legal process for obtaining MCCI records for investigations.

4. Evaluate the Use of Confidential Informants.  
- Examine the ethical and legal considerations in handling confidential informants.
- Assess the credibility and reliability of information provided by informants.
- Understand the different categories of informants.
- Recruiting and appropriately documenting informants.

5. Apply Knowledge through case studies.  
- Analyze real-world case studies to understand the practical application of information sources in investigations.
- Critically evaluate the outcomes of cases based on the information gathered and the methods employed.  Discussion on the outcomes and lessons learned from these cases.
